The Cello Big Band is open to all participants, staff and guest artists. It features new music and arrangements for a large cello ensemble incorporating alternative styles and some improvisation. Please try to come to all three rehearsals plus the concert on Sunday. The conductor is Joel Cohen from California.

NATALIE HAAS: THE CELLO IN CELTIC MUSIC

Learn melodies, as well as rhythmic and harmonically interesting accompaniment; chopping, shuffle bowing, bass lines, double stops, muting, pizzicato, chord inversions and more. Taught entirely by ear.

STEPHEN KATZ: FLYING PIZZICATO DELIVERY SERVICE

Stephen will show you how to design and retrofit pizz grooves with Flying Pizzicato, his contrapuntal, one-note-at-a-time approach to strumming the cello.

MAX LILJA: ROCKIN’ ROLES – AN EXPLORATION OF THE DIVERSE ROLES CELLO CAN PLAY IN A ROCK SETTING

Consideration of the musical, technical, communicational and environmental challenges of playing cello in a band and how we fit ourselves there.

ZACHARY BROWN AND JOE D’ESPOSITO: COLLABORATIVE COMPOSITIONAL COLLUSIONS

A “boots on the ground” look at how a successful writing team work their magic, with the added bonus that said team utilize modern techniques such as Evolved Triple Chop as an intrinsic part of their process.

NATALIE HAAS: CREATING AN ARRANGEMENT OF A TRADITIONAL TUNE

We will learn a few tunes together and in so doing, learn how to create groove to become better dance musicians, more well-rounded ensemble players and most importantly – have fun!

Based on String Project Los Angeles’ award winning curriculum, this class will teach students how to read chord charts and arrange their own music in an hour… No, really!!

Tips on choosing the right amplification and monitoring options for your cello and how to eq and tweak for optimum sound in different playing situations.

SARAH HAEFELI: ABSENCE MAKES OUR CELLO HEART STRONGER (FOR YOUNG CELLISTS)

We will leave our cellos behind and go outside to collect sounds of all kinds. Upon our return, we’ll explore how to reproduce them on our cellos and even notate them!

MAX LILJA: CREATION TO PRODUCTION

A rare opportunity to observe the inner workings of Max’s creative process, from nascent compositional ideas through to their realization on cello and attendant electronic effects. Both empowering and inspiring, this workshop will be a catalyst for your own creativity.

CORBIN KEEP: CELLIN’ OUT (FOR YOUNG CELLISTS)

We will remove all of the strings from our cellos, tie them together to make one big long string, then bow the giant string all together.
