The 15th annual New Directions Cello Festival was held in in Ithaca New York at Ithaca College from June 5 – 7, 2009.

Friday and Saturday evening concerts (June 5 & 6 at 7:30pm) were open to the public. All concerts were held in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the Whalen Center for Music on the Ithaca College Campus

GUEST ARTISTS:

The New Directions Cello Festival is a performance and educational forum for nonclassical cello, featuring performances, workshops, and jam sessions led by guest artists (and their groups) who are pioneering new directions for cellists in a wide variety of styles.

The festival began with registration on Friday June 5 between 11:30 and 12:30. The first workshops began at 1pm. The last event of the festival was the Cello Big Band concert (free and open) which ended on Sunday (June 7) at 3 pm.

2:10 – 3:10 Abby Newton – Crossing to Scotland- Learn beautiful tunes from Shetland, Ireland and Scotland arranged for cello by Abby Newton
Learn the Shetland bowing and more.
3:20 – 4:20 Chris White – The Complete Jazz Cellist: Play heads, chords, bass lines and jazz improvisation for a complete understanding of a jazz chart.

3:20 – 4:20 Stephen Katz- Flying Pizzicato 1 , Fundamentals & Woodshedding – Bring depth and detail to your cello strumming repertoire

9 – 10 Corbin Keep – More Weird Noises and How to Make Them: Add color and fun to your cello playing. Take an inside peek at some of Corbin’s favorite unusual cello sounds
10:10 – 11:10 Jody Redhage – Using Both Your Voices: Learn basic warm-ups and techniques for singing and playing at the same time.
11:20 – 12:20 Rufus Cappadocia – Rhythmic Independence & Polyrhythms

2 – 3 Sera Smolen – Name Music: Using the musical alphabet System of Mer Boel, we will play music generated by short names, long names, names as bass line, and as chord progression. See how your name will sound.
3:10 – 4:10 – Exhibition of Showroom Instruments and Accessories. Come learn about different kinds of electric cellos and gear.
4:10 – 5:10 Sera Smolen & Corinna Eikmeier – Improvisation Games You’ve Never Tried Before.

9 – 10 Corinna Eikmeier – Spiffer Session: Feldenkrais expert from Germany will explore how improvised musical ideas are formulated in relation to habitual movements at the instrument. Spiffer=Sequence, path, initiation, foundation, flow, effort, and respiration
10:10 – 11:10 Chris White – Accompanying Fiddle Tunes: How to Create Bass Lines and Simple Pizzicato and Bowed Accompaniments for Fiddle Tunes.
11:20 – 12:20 New Violin Family Jam Session: Experience the indescribable blend of these instruments, designed and built by master craftsman and acoustical researcher Robert Spear. Facilitated by master improvisers on bass and violin.

2 – 3 Jody Redhage – Of memory & Minutiae – Using Paula Matthusen’s award-winning, haunting and ethereal composition as a point of departure, participants will learn the steps needed to prepare an electro-acoustic performance using cello, voice and electronics
